Conning Your way into Top-Notch Schools

Talk about a con artist!!! A young 23-year-old man tricked his way into being accepted to two of the most competitive and hard to get into Ivy League universities in the United States. Adam B. Wheeler, who is originally from a small town here in Delaware, allegedly scammed his way into Harvard but not only that, after Harvard learned about his scam and expelled him, he also won admission to another top-flight school, Stanford University in California. He was admitted to Stanford as a transfer student after being dismissed from Harvard.

Wheeler is being held in lieu of $5,000 bail and indicted on charges of larceny and identity fraud. He is being held accountable of stealing more than $45,000 in grants, scholarships, and financial aid based on his lies. Prosecutors had said earlier that after Wheeler left Harvard he had also submitted transfer applications to Yale and Brown universities. Yale officials say he was not accepted. Brown officials have not commented.

Taking the Most out of Twitter Accounts

With The new multimedia platforms available, many-not to say all- companies are using social networks such as Facebook, Digg, Reddit and Twitter, just to mention a few, in order to promote their companies and/or their products. I ran into this post that gives several guidelines to twitter account users. As I myself was wondering how to increase my twitter followers, here it is so you could start making some arrangements in the way you use this social network. “How should a company measure the effectiveness of its Twitter account?”, written by  Phil Woods — a.k.a. @SmallBizPhil, a.k.a. @WhereInDE — has the answers to your questions.

Woods is a marketing consultant with Wilmington’s 2 Fish Group. He said that he runs at least three Twitter accounts for himself in addition to the accounts from several other businesses that turn to him in order for him to pump up their status on the social/professional networking site. The amount of followers says a lot about how successful your account is. Another interesting site that Woods mentioned is Klout.com. Klout will measure a tweeter’s influence among the twitterati. For all those business interested in learning this and many more tricks on how to improve your social media influence, Woods will have a presentation on Friday at the second annual Governor’s Entrepreneurial Business Conference at the Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. To see Friday’s full agenda, or to register, visit www.dedo.delaware.gov/gebc.

Heart attack claims life of former pitcher

Who would’ve though that a young and healthy person would die of an apparent heart attack? At the age of 37 the Dodgers former pitcher, Jose Lima died on Sunday in his Pasadena home.

Just two days ago, Lima attended a game were he was celebrated with a tribute on the video board after he rejoined the club as a member of the team’s alumni association. It is just unbelievable that this happened to him, out of nowhere. According to his wife, he was complaining at night while sleeping but by the time she called the paramedics, “they couldn’t do anything for him.” Everyone is certainly going to miss him and his talents. Get a Job Based on Online Ratings

With new technological advances and the more people reach out and use the web, privacy issues are starting to rise. You can’t be in a party without everyone taking pictures and posting them on Facebook, MySpace or any other social media gadget available nowadays. This new internet era is starting to transform the way everything is done. I remember talking to a friend and him telling me that when his nephew was about to start working at congress, they asked for his media passwords. What? This was my only reaction. Well, they do go around your pictures, the type of comments you have made and several other characteristics before they hire you. I don’t know if this is in every office or even if it is legal but it does happened.

We have even heard of stories of people getting fired because of comments, pictures and status posted on the World Wide Web. Where is my privacy, my freedom of speech? Well, although it is your page, you wouldn’t want to go around making negative comments about your job or your co-workers. What would you say then if there was a site where your co-workers could rate your performance? Well it wouldn’t surprise me that now employers would access this websites instead of just calling your references. After all, they would be able to get inside scoops of your good and bad performances at work. Well, I am not making it up. A new site called Unvarnished is making this unsettling idea real. The worst thing, for me, is that it is anonymous, so you would never know who said things about you. And, what if it is something made up just to make you look bad? I mean this idea doesn’t seem too helpful, at least to me. The website www.getunvarnished.com is in a private “beta” test so not everyone can access it. So who know what those VIP who are able to get in are writing about you!  Read the whole story here and get more information.

Don’t take it for Granted

It was Mother’s Day weekend so I guess most of us did pretty much the same thing. I went to Alabama to visit my mom and my wife’s mother as well. The kids were not to happy because they don’t like it there but, they had no choice. You know how they always say that we tend to take things for granted? Well, now we know and we learned it the hard way. When my wife and I met in high school, we couldn’t see the day we moved from our small town there. We have moved a couple of times around, as you know, but it hadn’t been until now that we realized we had left behind.

Being able to go back home, seeing our friends and family, and reviving some of those great memories we had there, was more than we could have asked for. I had the three most important women in my life with me, and I am not counting the mother in law lol. My mother was so in love with Stephanie, my youngest daughter, that she didn’t want us to leave. My wife wanted a spa day so I got a package for her, her mother and my mother and I took the kids out until they were done. I must say, this is something we take for granted all the time. The work women do is unmatchable. My wife works full time and yet handles all the house chores and more and she never complains. So I made a promise to myself. Mother’s Day is not something we are going to celebrate one day a year. Every time I have the chance, I will make her day as wonderful as I can. I encourage you all to do the same for your partners, for your family, for your mom.

Love Montessori Method

When my wife and I moved here were looking for a good school for our kids we were really worried. Back in Florida, they attended a Montessori School and they were extremely happy there and so were we. The good thing is that we have a really good Montessori school here as well. In fact, it might be even better than the one the kids went to. This is where they go to school to. Wilmington Montessori School has become one of the best and top Montessori schools in the country. Over the last 45 years, their excellent ways of teaching and students achievements have prove it to be one of the best places to put your kids in. For those who do not know what the Montessori Method is all about, it is an approach to educate children following Maria Montessori’s research.

It started from Dr. Montessori’s discovery of what she referred to as “the child’s true normal nature”. Her observations developed the educational plan that gives young children freedom in an environment prepared with materials designed for their self-directed learning activity. Teachers need to be prepared and trained in this method because the way that groups are divided and the way that children move from one step to the other vary. The teacher needs to view the child’s inner natural guidance for his or her own perfect self-directed development. Their main role is to watch over the environment to remove any obstacles that would interfere with this natural development.

In honor to earth day, the school had a very cute activity. Sixth graders raised environmental awareness by dressing up in costumes reflecting environmental conservation tips and sharing environmental facts with the school community. These are the type of activities that make me feel comfortable taking my kids there. I know that they are learning good things.

There is Still Hope

There are still good people around. There are good friends, co-workers and family willing to give you a helping hand whenever you need it. Not everything has to be so pessimistic nowadays. And it feels even better when it is a surprise.

Each year, the workers from the Maryland plant get together for a paid day of service during a plant shutdown. According to an operations leader at the plant, this is meant to build relationships while helping out a fellow employee who needs it. This year, the help was given to a soldier that was returning home after a long year in Iraq. The house was messed up on the outside. Ever since Sergeant Mark Mitchell left for duty with the National Guard, the home’s exterior had gone untouched. His wife, Amy Press, said that it was practically impossible to keep up with the outside work and according to her, “that is not my thing.” If you watched the news, you could see how messy it was. Ivy covered the side of the home, the backyard grass was very tall, the shed door didn’t work, and there was even a tree laying there after the storms that occurred in February. Honestly, I do not know how is it possible to let the house you live in get in this conditions but this set aside, I am excited to see that there is people willing to help others.

Press was very excited and as tears dropped down her cheeks, she said that she was thrilled that “our house is now a house with a real yard.” It was a nice surprise for a returning soldier that now could just spend his time with his family instead of doing house work. “Now I can catch up with my family, rather than get started on the honey-to-do list,” he said. “I appreciate it.”

Knowledge Quick-Notes

You will never know everything in life. Every single day you learn something new. For instance, while talking to some of my coworkers today, I found several interesting facts regarding the fabulous state of Delaware.

You must be used to how each state is divided by counties. For example, in the state of Florida, where I relocated from, there are 67 counties. And that is nothing; the state of Texas has 254 followed by Georgia with 159 and so forth. Do you know how many counties you can find in Delaware? Only three; yes three. It is the state with the fewest counties. In that same line, Hawaii has 4 and Rhode Island has 5. Not only that, but Delaware is also the lowest state with an average altitude of only 60 feet above sea level. Here we are not that far away from my former state of Florida. Florida is located only 100 feet above sea level, winning the second place along with Louisiana and followed by the District of Colombia (D.C.) with 150 feet above sea level.

You see, each day you learn something new and exciting not only about the place you are living at but you also get to compare it to other places as well. I just love these interesting facts. I must get a note pad and start jotting them down.

Milk does a Body Good

Well how about that? I just found out that the official state beverage of Delaware is a nice cold (or warm) glass of milk. Milk was made the official State beverage on June 3, 1983. Delaware is not the only state to have milk as its official beverage of choice, Louisiana, Minnesota, New York, North and South Dakota, Oklahoma, and of course Wisconsin just to name a few. So after a long day of work, you can go home, kick off your shoes and have a nice glass of milk and a slice of peach pie, which by the way is the states official dessert of choice too. That sounds like a way to end the night to me.

Stopping Animal Cruelty

Everyone must know a person who is an animal lover or at certain point just felt bad for a little defenseless animal and took it under your wing. I remember when I was a kid; I found a cat in our backyard. It was pouring rain and I just couldn’t leave him there. Mom was hysterical because my dad was allergic to them, but she said that it was ok until the rain passed by. You get so attached to these little animals that you eventually start treating them as part of the family. Matias is my 12 year old cat. Yes, I kept him under the condition that I was going to make sure he wouldn’t go close to any of my dad’s stuff. This is why I understand this story that happened right here in Delaware, in Dover.

Susan Hudson moved to a house and there were several cats. She kept them and took them to the vet, had them immunized and gave them a home. I am fairly new to Delaware so I had no clue of this situation that happened early January. Her husband found three of them mutilated on the front porch, with two of the neighbor’s pit bulls standing over them. They called the Kent County SPCA but nothing could be done about the dogs because the State law doesn’t include cats as domestic animal victims, however, so there are no repercussions for a dog that kills a cat. It is a different story if it is another dog, a chicken or any livestock.

This is why I find it imperative for a new bill to be passed. Cats are pets just like any other dog. Senate Bill 208, authored by Sen. Gary Simpson, R-Milford, would add cats to the list of domestic animal victims. It’s one of several circulating in Legislative Hall to reduce animal cruelty. There are many that are opposed to this because they allege that dogs chasing cats is a natural tendency. But come on, mutilating and killing them is not. There are several other bills under study but definitely something must be done.
